Social Media & Digital Boundary Policy

At Haven Psychotherapy, we believe in the power of connection and the importance of destigmatizing mental health. While we maintain a professional social media presence for educational purposes, our priority is always your privacy and the integrity of the therapeutic relationship. To protect the confidentiality of our clients, we adhere to the following digital boundaries:

  • Friending & Following: To maintain clear professional boundaries, Haven therapists do not accept “friend” or contact requests from current or former clients on any personal social networking sites. Clients are welcome to “follow” our professional business pages, but please be aware that doing so may identify a client as a client.

  • Interacting: We do not communicate with clients via social media (likes, comments, DMs, etc.). These platforms are not secure or HIPAA-compliant. Clients who need to get in touch with their provider should use the secure Client Portal or the contact methods provided in the intake paperwork.

  • Searching: We respect our clients’ “digital right to privacy.” It is not our practice to search for clients online (Googling or social media) unless there is a genuine clinical emergency where we are concerned for immediate client safety.

  • Reviews & Testimonials: Ethical codes prohibit us from soliciting testimonials from current or former clients. Clients have every right to share their experiences with Haven on public forums, but to protect the privacy of our clients, we will not respond to or acknowledge these reviews publicly.

  • Location-Based Services: Clients who attend in-person therapy and use GPS-based apps (like Facebook Check-ins), should be aware that checking in at our office location could inadvertently reveal client status on the social network.

The “Vibe” Check: If we happen to see each other in person out in the wild (aka the community), we will follow your lead. We won’t acknowledge you first to protect your privacy and leave you in control. But if you say “Hi,” we will happily return the greeting! Any Haven team member who encounters a minor client with a parent will follow the minor’s lead.
